Consider images So itâs obvious that choosing the correct targeting is important when it comes to Facebook ads, however you should also spend some time perfecting the images you are going to be using, as they need to have impact and catch peopleâs attention. What Iâve learnt about choosing an image for your advert is: Donât use your company logo or a photo of the logo. Instead, choose a relevant photo or graphic that fits with the clients brand. In my experience, having human faces in an image subconsciously attracts users to a post/advert. Try not to include too much text in an advert image. Having over 20% of text in an image can actually reduce the reach the advert has. Show off the culture at a company by using user-generated images or genuine photos of people having fun at social events. 4. Track your progress from the outset As well as providing information about the amount of clicks and CPC, Facebook allows advertisers to place a tracking pixel within the code on their website, to accurately measure the amount of people completing a certain action on their site. Five reasons to forget about money and focus on what makes you happy at work - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The constant hunt for more money, eternally chasing the next raise, measuring yourself against the number on your pay check is no way to run a career, and no way to live a work life. Using money as your yardstick is seductive because its one of the few objective measures of progress in a career. If you made 100,000 last year and 150,000 this year you must be doing better, right? Wrong. Your salary, no matter how large, can never make you happy at work. Sacrificing happiness at work for more money is a terrible trade one that you will end up regretting. Heres five reasons why. 1: More money does not make you happier Most people think that having a higher income would make them happier. They?re wrong! That is the conclusion of a study by Two Princeton professors, economist Alan B. Krueger and psychologist and Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman, who say that: The belief that high income is associated with good mood is widespread but mostly illusory. People with above-average income are relatively satisfied with their lives but are barely happier than others in moment-to-moment experience, tend to be more tense, and do not spend more time in particularly enjoyable activities. The problem is that people still act on their mistaken belief that making more money makes them happier: Despite the weak relationship between income and global life satisfaction or experienced happiness, many people are highly motivated to increase their income. In some cases, this focusing illusion may lead to a misallocation of time, from accepting lengthy commutes (which are among the worst moments of the day) to sacrificing time spent socializing (which are among the best moments of the day). Which is just a fancy way of saying that you may think that switching jobs to get a 25% raise in return for a 2-hour commute or a 70-hour work week or ten days a month of business travel is a good deal. You?re wrong. You?d be happier with a lower salary, a more fun job and more time with your friends and family. 2: Always thinking of money is bad for you Money pushes people into a state where they become focused on achieving their own goals without help of others, says researcher Kathleen Vohs, assistant marketing professor at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. They performed a series of experiments where subjects were asked to solve a difficult puzzle and told they could ask for help. Some of the subjects were subliminally primed to think of money, eg. by placing a pile of monopoly money in their field of vision or by giving them a warm-up exercise where they had to de-scramble sentences related to money. (source) The experiment showed that thinking of money had a significant, negative effect on the subjects: They became less likely to ask for help They became more reluctant to help others They became less generous They isolated themselves more from others So if your success depends on you working well with others, on being able to help others and ask for help, thinking of money (even in a subtle and subconscious way) makes you less effective. On the other hand, if your success depends on you being selfish and isolated go right ahead, make money your only goal :o) One group of people who are particularly at risk are those who think that time is money. Bob Sutton, author of the excellent book The No Asshole Rule, has a great post on how the billable hour affects people. This constant focus on money even means that ?lawyers watching their kids play soccer admitted to mentally ticking away lost income for each minute they stood on the sidelines.??? Ouch. 3: The actual amount doesnt matter fairness does Try this experiment: Get a bunch of Capuchin monkeys, and train them to give you a small, polished granite rock in exchange for a slice of cucumber. Capuchins are pretty clever, and soon the monkeys learn that when they hand over the rock, they get their treat. Then try something new: Get two of these monkeys together, and give one of them a better treat. Capuchin monkeys like cucumber fine, but they like grapes even better because they?re sweeter. When one capuchin sees you paying another one in grapes, it refuses to cooperate, and will no longer hand over the rock in exchange for cucumber. ?Listen, buster,??? it seems to say, ?you?re paying that guy in grapes and my work is at least as good. I want grapes too, or I?m going on strike. (source) In another experiment using brain-scanning equipment, this time on humans, researchers found a center in our brains that lights up whenever we believe we?re being treated unfairly. It seems that fairness is not just a nice ideal to strive for?we have a biological need to be treated fairly (source). So we humans have a built-in desire for fairness that even seems to be present in other species close to us. If you feel that your salary is unfair, this will make you unhappy! 4: Its not getting what you want its wanting what you get Stephen Shapiro, author of the excellent book Goal Free Living, writes about a German study that shows that what really matters is the gap between your current income and your desired income. When people wish for more money than they have, they tend to be unhappy. There are of course two ways to close this gap, the traditional one being to make more money. The downside of this approach is, that very often, more isnt enough and the more people have, the more they want. The other approach is much more sustainable, and it is to want what you have. To realize that once your most basic needs are met, more money, a bigger house, a larger car and flat-screen TVs in every room will not make you any happier than you are today! But being happy with what you have, will. 5: Your salary can make you unhappy but not happy Herzbergs motivational theory divides motivational factors in two categories: Hygiene and motivational. The hygiene factors can make us unhappy when theyre not present, but their presence cant make us happy. The motivational factors can actually make us happy. Salary falls squarely in the hygiene category, meaning that getting paid well can remove dissatisfaction but it cant create satisfaction. What to do instead: cultivate a healthy attitude towards money I want to make this very clear: Im not against money. I looooooove money. Money is fun. There is nothing wrong with making tons of it. And Im not saying you should ignore money completely and just accept whatever your workplace is willing to pay you. Im also not saying that you have to choose that it can only ever be money or happiness. You can have both. But the way to get it is to cultivate a healthy attitude towards money. Which is this: Your salary makes it possible for you to come to work. Its not what motivates you or makes you happy. Its a means, not an end. An unfair salary has the power to make you unhappy a fair one cant make you happy. Never sacrifice your happiness at work for money. If you make all your career decisions based on money you will always be chasing the next, larger paycheck, never stopping to think if you like what you do in pursuit of that next raise. If you instead decide based on what will make you happy at work, theres a much bigger chance that you will be. You will probably also make more money. You should make an effort to be paid what youre worth to get what is fair considering how much value you create and what other people in the company and in similar positions elsewhere are getting. Then forget about money and focus on enjoying your job. And you know what: This is pretty hard. Im doing well financially, and I still dream of all the great stuff more money could by me. Its damn hard to let go of. But I know that the main reason Im happy today is not that I make more money than before its that I enjoy what I have and that I live squarely within my means. THAT is true wealth, and Im not exactly the first to say so (by a long shot): ?Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty??? Can you be happy in an evil business - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog My Dutch Pal Erno Mijland asks a very interesting question: Last week I watched the film Our Daily Bread which is a documentary on how food is produced in Europe. It shows an industry in which theres not a lot of respect for plants and animals: lots of poison, young chickens being thrown around, pigs transported in small boxes etc. etc. Because I was a bit prepared these images didnt shock me very much. What did shock me, were the scenes in which the workers in this industry where shown. People showing no emotion whatsoever in what they where doing, big automated halls where a worker works (and lunches) alone, people doing mind torturing repetitive work all day long. It made me wonder: who could possibly be happy at work in these kind of conditions? What a great question. The easy answer would be No one. No one can be happy under these conditions. But the truth is a little more complicated. If you havent seen Our Daily Bread and youre not squeamish, you can see a short clip from the movie here: Interestingly, Im currently reading a book called Gig, which simply consists of interviews with working Americans. I just read about the HR manager in a slaughterhouse, who talks about the same issue: Last month, I hired eighty-five people and ninety-two left. Thats not uncommon. Were bleeding people. I hire them and they leave Some people will quit fifteen minutes after they get on the floor because it is so ugly to them. The interview also has some graphic descriptions of employees walking around in a couple of inches of cow blood No wonder so many people quit! But this is not just about killing cows. Could you be happy working for a company that makes land mines? Or a company that pollutes the environment? Or a tobacco company? Or working for Microsoft? Just kidding! The larger question is this: Can you be happy at work if you deeply believe that your workplace ultimately makes the world a worse place? Here are some factors to take into account: 1: Mismatch between personal and company values is a huge stress factor When your job goes against your personal values, youre in a very difficult situation. This means, that on a daily basis you are doing things that you cant defend to yourself. This causes what we might call values stress a feeling of stress that comes from a conflict of values. This can be every bit as serious and damaging as the old garden-variety stress that comes from being busy. Even if youre not actually making the land mines lets say youre just the receptionist this may weigh heavily on you. Every single day. 2: You can temporarily ignore this mismatch However, you can keep yourself from dealing with this stress factor simply by ignoring it. The human mind has a fantastic ability to shut things out and adapt. If you so choose, you can simply keep yourself from realizing that this is bad. You can focus on the good aspects on your job, have fun with nice co-workers, and even still take pleasure from doing your job well. A lot of people certainly do this for a while, particularly when they really need the salary. But while it can enable you to be happy at work for a time, it is not a good long term strategy. Even CEOs are not immune to this temporary blindness. Here, Ray Anderson, the CEO of Interface the worlds largest manufacturer of carpets, explains how he suddenly realized that his company was bad for the environment: it dawned on me that they way I?d been running Interface is the way of the plunderer. Plundering something that is not mine, something that belongs to every creature on earth. And I said to myself ?My goodness, a day must come where this is illegal, where plundering is not allowed. I mean, it must come.? So I said to myself ?My goodness, some day people like me will end up in jail.? The good news is that he made this realization and that he was in a position to act on it and make Interface environmentally responsible. If youre an employee of an evil workplace, your main option is probably to get out of Dodge and find another job you can be proud of. 3: The higher your investment in the company, the easier it is to blind yourself And Im not just talking stocks. You can invest money, but also time and identity in your work. The more you have invested already, the harder it will be for you to realize that things are just plain wrong. This specifically means that the longer you stay, the harder it gets to leave. 4: Being part of a bad system changes your perception And more than anything, the system you exist in can shape your perception. If everyone around you acts like hey, spending your day knee-deep in cow guts is perfectly normal or sure its OK to cheat about the company finances everybody does it then youre more likely to think so too. The Milgram experiment may be the most chilling reminder of this effect. In it, subjects were lead to believe that they were part of a study in learning that required them to give another test subject electrical shocks. In reality the other person was an actor and no shocks were given. The study showed that 65% of the subjects continued administering ever more powerful electrical shocks even though the actor was screaming in pain and later on pretended to pass out. The subjects were never pressured if they protested they were simply told in a calm voice that The experiment requires that you continue or You have no other choice, you must go on. Heres part of Milgrams chilling conclusion: Ordinary people, simply doing their jobs, and without any particular hostility on their part, can become agents in a terrible destructive process. Moreover, even when the destructive effects of their work become patently clear, and they are asked to carry out actions incompatible with fundamental standards of morality, relatively few people have the resources needed to resist authority. So when people in authority tell us to do something that we know is wrong, when the entire system just acts as if unethical, damaging behavior is just business as usual, many of us are powerless to resist. You may think that YOU are exempt from this, but in reality were all subject to this effect.
